Valentine's Day Stinks Without a Valentine

Valentine’s Day may be celebrated every February 14, but is it really celebrated by everyone? While it can be a nice idea for those in a relationship, should it really exist when it can cause problems for most who are not in a relationship?

Research shows that 75 percent of suicide attempts are related to relationship problems, according to "11,002 Things to Be Miserable About" by Lia and Nick Romero. Therefore, those who are not in a relationship on Valentine’s Day will have just one more reason to contemplate suicide. Do we really need another reason for people to kill themselves?

Another interesting fact is that while 46 percent of Americans give candy such as chocolate as a gift on Valentine’s Day, 67 percent of Americans are either overweight or obese. Should we really promote eating more candy than usual in a country where we have so many problems with obesity?

64 percent of American men do not make Valentine’s Day plans in advance, which is just one more thing that men have to remember or else risk losing their girlfriend. How does this seem fair at all? Birthdays and anniversaries are one thing, but thinking about Valentine’s Day can be a whole other opportunity for running into problems.

These are just a few of the many reasons why we should re-think Valentine’s Day, and consider if it is really worth it to celebrate such an exclusive holiday.
